Paper Flower Lei Supplies:
You will need:
- Paper flowers 22-25 depending on how long you want your lei.
- Paper Leaves (optional)
- Paper Straws (2-3 cut into 1" lengths)
- Twine/String
- Long Needle
Step 1: Hand-cut, or die cut flowers from a variety of colors. I used a beautiful flower die cut from The Stamp Market and a Sizzix Big Shot machine. I also used a Monstera leaf die cut from Echo Park Paper to cut leaves.
Step 2: Cut the paper straws into 1" lengths. Smaller lengths will require more flowers, longer lengths will require less flowers.
Step 3: Cut a piece of twine/thread to the length you want the necklace plus an additional 8" to tie off the ends. Thread a long needle with the twine/thread. Pierce the first flower through the center with the needle and then thread the needle through a straw. Repeat for each flower. You can do create a random pattern or follow a pattern like I did here with yellow, coral, and aqua flowers following one another. Pull the thread all the way through to about 4" from the end of the twine.
Once you have the length you want, tie the ends of the string into a knot. Here's a look at the final lei.
I used a paintbrush to curl up the petals of each flower to make them look more realistic.
You can see how fun this would be with different flower styles, or a different color scheme. Also, look for paper straws with patterns. Mine has a triangle pattern in black, which looks so cute on this lei. Take a moment to pin your favorite images for inspiration later. Then let me know if you make something like this with your kids in the comments below. I'd love to hear how it went!
