How to Choose the Best Ink Pads for Layered Stamps

Have you tried the exciting new layered stamp trend? This is where a stamp company provides multiple layers of an image and you use different gradients of the same ink color to create the image. The end result is a gorgeous, realistic image. I am loving this trend, but the hardest thing for me about this trend is finding ink pads for these layered stamps. In this post, I'll share some ideas for layered ink pad sets that will make this decision process a whole lot easier. Keep reading for suggestions, what to look for, and some ways to use these awesome ink pads.

Layered and Gradient Ink Pad Sets:

The hardest thing for me about this layering trend has been finding ink pads that create a good gradient of color. Some pinks pull orange, some pull fuchsia and the time and effort required to find just the right set, keep a record of those combinations, and then easily find them again was cutting into my stamping time. So I went in search of companies that sell pre-packaged gradient, layered ink pads. Here are some of the best ink pads for layered stamping.

Some of my favorite companies that sell these gradient sets are Hampton Arts, Studio G, Altenew, Hero Arts, Simon Says Stamp, and Memento. You can find these sets pre-packaged and ready to go. These sets run from $9.99 to $16.99 depending on the store from which you purchase them. You can also find them in different ink pad sizes. For instance, Altenew sells both larger pad sets, as well as, smaller ink pad sets so depending on your budget, you can still find a set that works well for you.

How do I determine which sets to get? I started with the colors I love most first: yellow and an olive green set. I knew this color combination would work well. From there I added several other gradient colors like blue, red, purple, and a leaf green set. In the future, I will add colors I use less such as grey and brown.

The smaller ink pads can be stored in the Tim Holtz mini distress ink container. The box contains a plastic inset that keeps each ink pad in place. The Studio G and Hampton Arts ink pads I purchased are larger and can be stored in an ink tower like this one HERE or in the Ikea ALEX drawer set. I like to store mine lightest color first with the darkest gradient last. This makes it easy to grab each color as I need it.
