Inexpensive Photo Backdrop Ideas:

Photo Backdrop Idea #1: Fabric. Fabric is a super cheap way to get a larger backdrop. Fat quarters are SUPER cheap and can be ironed to form an infinity backdrop or as a great flat lay option. Look at different textures like felt, burlap, or vinyl to mix it up. Or try a cool patterned fabric. You can attach ironed fabric to foam core for a sturdier and more permanent backdrop if you desire. Store fabric so it doesn't wrinkle.

Photo Backdrop Idea #2:Vinyl Backdrops. These vinyl backdrops are simply photographs of backgrounds printed on vinyl. You can find these on Esty, Amazon, and some photography shops. They come in small sizes like 12" x 12" or large enough for a large photo shoot. Get the size you can both store and afford. They roll up easily and look realistic in your photos. I've shared a few of my favorites below in the "Shop the Products" section.

Photo Backdrop Idea #3: Chalkboards. The rich, textured look of a chalkboard looks awesome as a backdrop. I like both green and black. You can always paint plywood with chalkboard paint if you want something larger or smaller. I had some of these on hand from home decor projects in my home. I stole them for my photography studio.

Photo Backdrop Idea #4: Wooden Boards. If you want the look of real wood, then wooden boards from your favorite home center are awesome. Have them cut down to a more manageable size. Home centers will often give you one cut for free. Another AWESOME place to find cool boards? Ikea's Clearance section. They have leftover tabletops and cabinet pieces. They come in all different sizes and cool finishes. These are much heavier than the vinyl backdrops but are a good option for wood photography. You can also spray, chalk, or acrylic paint a wooden plywood board in colors that match your brand. Super easy peasy option and CHEAP!

Photo Backdrop Idea #5: Wrapping Paper. I'll bet you already have some of this laying around. I especially like solid colors. Look for trendy colors at places like Target, JoAnns, and your favorite party store. While you're there look for plastic table cloths. As long as they aren't too shiny, you can get a really cheap option here. The Dollar Store is a great option for this!

Photo Backdrop Idea #6: Poster Board. At under $1, these are a really cheap option. These typically come in very traditional colors, but try an art store for more trendy colors. You can tape these on the wall for a backdrop or use for a flat lay. These would be a great backdrop for children's crafts, primary color branding, and fiesta-style photos.

Some other ideas might include: scrapbooking paper, paper rolls, curtains, tablecloths, wallpaper, newspaper, etc. Look for color, texture, pattern that all fit your brand colors and style. Then set up some shots and practice to get a feel for what feels most like you. If you have more ideas, be sure to share them with me in the comments section below. I'd love to hear what you are using!

  1. I just purchased a roll of "project paper" in a marble pattern from JoAnn's. Kind of like thick wrapping paper.
