Beautiful People, Beautiful Things: Behind the Brand with Leah Farquharson

Welcome to this month's "Beautiful People, Beautiful Things" blog post. I am constantly amazed at the talent people have in the crafting and art industries. I wanted to share some of these beautiful people's beautiful work with my readers. In these posts, I'll interview a special designer/artist. He or she will share their work, their shop, and more so you can get to know them a little bit better.

The Backstory: Growing up in the Midwest, I was surrounded by women who used special artisan skills to create and sell goods for supplemental income. My business grew out of my desire to do the same! Our family is a huge priority in my life, and running a business from home gives me the opportunity have the best of both worlds. I concept, prototype and create all of my designs using materials that I love, so every item is a reflection of me and my personality.  Bluebird Chic is a registered business that I love and am working hard to build, so I take every aspect of it very seriously.

All About You: I've been crafting and creating handmade goods since I was very young. My mom taught me the skills she knew like cross stitch, and then made a point to find someone to teach me any other skills I was interested in. When I was about 14, she hired someone to teach me how to sew, and over the years a special talent for understanding pattern design has emerged.

I started out by modifying patterns from the store to fit my needs, but over time I found I was able to visualize things that I wanted to create. I've been so blessed to be able to use those skills to create everything from wool suits to corduroy jackets (it must have been awesome as someone stole it!), to my own wedding dress. My love of fashion and handmade quilts influences a lot of the things that I create.

I was so excited to contribute two DIY articles to Mollie Makes magazine in the past year. My shop items have been featured on many blogs and websites, including a recent feature on Country Living Magazine's website. As my business grows, I'm so excited and proud to open things up for other skilled sewists to contract and earn supplemental income as well.

My interests go well beyond sewing, though. I enjoy knitting, crochet, jewelry making, and scrapbooking. My scrapbooking and papercrafting projects have published in Memory Makers Magazine, Scrapbook Trends, Cards, Entreartiste, The Scrapbook Magazine (UK), and several others. I've been delighted to work for some of the top companies in the scrapbooking industry, as well, including Hambly Screenprints, American Crafts, Fancy Pants Designs, Jenni Bowlin Studios, Maya Road and more.

Playing Favorites: I wouldn't dare ask a designer to pick a favorite piece from their collection, as that would be like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. But I certainly can. I adore this multi-colored chevron camera strap. It just makes me happy!

  2. I love Leah's work! I was waiting on one of her flower rings awhile back for my sister in law, there were shipping issues, and it got sent out late, Leah included another ring along with a note of apology...very unnecessary, but very appreciated. I love how original all of her items are, and you can see by the photos she posts on instagram/her facebook page, the true love that she has for what she does. She also always inspires me with her layouts...gorgeous work no matter what medium she is working in! Thanks for the chance! :)
