AC Stamp Giveaway WINNER!!

Happy Halloween! Today I plan on watching my son's Halloween parade at school. Then I may bribe my teenager to help take him out later today to go trick-or-treating, or perhaps I can convince her to answer the door and hand out candy at our house. It's supposed to be beautiful weather, which for our neck of the woods is very RARE.

To celebrate I'm announcing the winner of the AC Stamp Giveaway of this darling Halloween stamp:

And the winner is . . .

Thanks to all who played along! jking788 please contact me via js_gallacher@hotmail.com so I can ship out your stamp. Return tomorrow for the start of a very awesome 2Peas Garden Girl Blog Hop with several of the Garden Girls from Two Peas in a Bucket! We have some fun projects and giveaways planned for you!

Memories are Sweet

Yesterday my sister and I ran away together to do some shopping. Of course it isn't really shopping if you don't have any money, so we'll call it window shopping. After a long week we both wanted some time out. It was much too short and cut even more short by ridiculous amounts of construction and traffic (who decides that the entire state road system needs an overhaul that takes THREE years). Frustrating to say the least, but something about spending time with family doing simple things always makes me happy.

This morning I awoke to a photo via e-mail she had discovered of Joseph and her oldest boy, Aaron. It's hard to believe that my boy was ever that little. This is the "I've got muscles" face. I love that she captured an ordinary moment for me:

Just yesterday my husband and I were discussing how quickly the time passes and how few the hours are that we still have with our children. It kills me to know that we have a limited amount of time where they will want to be with us. I recognize that it's our role as parents to raise them to be independent, but no one warned me how sad I would feel about that.

Here is another everyday moment captured forever on film. This is one of my son drawing in his brand new room that he's so proud of that he's taken to giving tours of the place:

Book Club is Beautiful!

Do you participate in a book club in your area? I've been a part of one for a few years now. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the girls and discussing (ok, contesting) parts of the latest book we'd read. I'm a voracious reader, but I tend to get stuck in a genre rut so book club helps introduce me to books that I wouldn't normally read. I have read books about building schools in Afghanistan. I've read books about the Jews suffering through the Holocaust. I've read about the atrocities in Rowanda. It has been eye opening and educational. I suggest starting your own book club if there isn't one you currently attend. It's a great way to formulate friendships and hear others' opinions and perspectives.

Along those same lines, I wanted to share a layout using products inspired by the very books that I love. Last year American Crafts introduced their "Classics" line, which was inspired by classic literature. The patterns are reminiscient of old book patterns and the titles of the pieces within this line will hint at some of the books you studied in high school and college.

What I love about this line, is the sophisticated color palette. I wanted to see how well that palette would work with a picture of my niece, Zadie. I was happy to see that they coordinate beautifully.

Here is a close-up shot of the stamped title block. I stamped the images behind the title with Versamark stamping ink and then heat embossed the images with clear embossing powder. Then I layered chipboard layers and a title cut from my Silhouette machine.

One other fun element on this page is the die cut lattice shape beneath the title. I placed colored squares behind some of the open design for a pop of color.

This layout has become one of my favorites. I guess you could say it's a classic in its own right because it's a classic me page--stamping, die cutting, and lots of color.

Wordy Wednesday: The Fickle Fist Bump

I am the generation of natural affection between friends. It wasn't uncommon when I was a teenager to see friends give each other a hug. It was ok to tell your friend that you loved them and everyone understood there was a far cry between the "in love" kind of love and the "you're my best friend in the whole world" kind of love. Nowadays for the fear of being misread, we've adopted the impersonal and rather awkward fist bump.

The fist bump appears in that ever uncomfortable moment when no one knows whether to hug, half-hug, or shake hands. It is expressed between teenage boys who want to acknowledge, "Hey, you're cool" but won't ever express feelings verbally. It appears when bosses and coaches want to replace the vintage "high five" with a "Way to Go" fist acknolwedgement. And it appears between two people meeting for the first time, who have either never been introduced to the handshake (think younger generation) or have long dismissed the older routines.

Like the first kiss, the fist bump is awkward and uncomfortable. There's the "hit and miss" between the giver and receiver when only part of the first fist makes contact with the second fist. Where you're left wondering if you go for a "do over" or leave it hanging as is. Is it as "cool" if business is left unfinished?

How about the confusing first relationship, when you're tring to determine how you really feel about this person? Does this person deserve a fist bump or are they only a handshake kind of person? How do I handle it if they want a fist bump, and I'm not ready to commit? The pressure is on to quickly determine if the person is worthy enough for your fist or not.

And then there's the unbalanced relationship when one person's fist is a little more aggressive than the other person's fist. Where one person's fist is bruised in the exchange but no one acknowledges that it didn't work out perfectly and they both leave quickly, one quietly nursing their wounds.

Then there's the "I'm just not that into you" response where you come at someone with your fist, and they firmly offer you their hand. Nothing like the humiliation of public rejection to make you feel uncool and unwanted.

There's also the over compensated fist bump in which elaborate choreography ensues after the intial fist bump, leaving you feeling as if you failed your tryout for "Fist Bumping with the Stars."

And does anyone else recognize that a fist bump is simply a controlled punch coming at you in slow-motion speed?

Now I'm all for showing affection through touch, but I'd happily return to the old-fashioned handshake where I know I can hold the person's attention by gently cradling their hand between my own. More intimate and friendly the handshake clearly communicaties, "I'm totally willing to touch you." More like an equal partnership where everyone knows the commitment level, the old-fashioned handshake is perfect for first meetings, congratulations, and even the occasional "I think you're great." Join me in the handshake evolution where we go from the awkwardness of punching each other to the softer, more loving action of holding hands.

[Sorry. Couldn't resist.}

'Tis the Season Video Series: Project 2

Welcome back to another edition of the 'Tis the Season" video series. Today I've created a scandinavian holiday card. Look for unique takes on the traditional Christmas themed cards. Find something modern, or vintage, or fresh that fits your design style.

Here is the project I create within the video:

And here is a close-up photo of the completed card:

Watch Me Grow: An Aunt's Perspective

I'm one lucky girl! I am the aunt to several nieces and nephews and each one has a special place in my heart. For the olders I am amazed at the adults they have become and so proud as they begin their lives with their spouses and start families of their own. For the middles, we joke and have fun and tease. And for the littles, it's tough not to spoil them rotten. Like I said. I'm pretty lucky.

This is one of the reasons why. This is my niece Zadie. Look at that naturally curly hair. She's a feisty, crazy little lady and she's completely captured my heart. As the daughter of my youngest sister who lives fairly nearby, I get to see her quite a bit. It of course makes me miss all the ones I don't get to see on a regular basis.

Who knew that I could love my nieces and nephews as if they were my own children. But it's true. No matter where they live I'm always thinking about them. I just adore them all!

This layout was created for 2Peas using the My Little Shoebox line "Pretty Little Things." I wanted to create a layout by using just the darling patterned papers in the line so I cut out pieces from the paper and added them to several boxes in this grid design:

You can find additional photos for completing this layout here. And be sure to check out all the designer's work, which is available here. I'm constantly amazed by the designers I get to work with!
