When I set out to purchase my very first non-hand-me-down kitchen table, I was very picky about what I wanted. I found the exact table I wanted at a place that produces Pottery Barn knock-offs. Because I'm a Pottery Barn wanna-be, I was all over this table. I also knew from my collection of Pottery Barn catalogs the style of chair I wanted: some x-back dining room chairs in black. Thankfully the same store had several styles to choose from, and I found exactly what I wanted. I bought six to fit the table and came home happy.
I loved my table and chairs in our last home, but in this home it wasn't long before the table felt flat and "unfinished" in it's design. I knew I needed to "dress it up" a bit and I wasn't sure how. One day I was browsing at TJ Maxx when I saw two sisal chairs, and then it hit me! I could replace the two end chairs for something a little more sophisticated. Something different.

Thankfully because TJ Maxx always has deeply discounted items, I was able to score the two chairs for a steal of a deal! I replaced two of my wooden x-back chairs with these new chairs and the result is much more interesting now. I store the two other chairs in my storage room for when I want to use the extra leaf that came with my table.
It was an easy fix, but I really love how it elevates the look of my design. You could consider some of the following options to spruce up your dining room set and mix and match your chairs:
* Upholstered chairs
* Different colored chairs
* Chairs with arms
* Chairs in a different texture
* Slipcovers for the end chairs or all of the chairs
No matter what chairs you incorporate into your design, make sure they match the feel you are going for. Since I like a coastal vibe, the sisal chairs work perfectly with the rest of my decor. You might want something more casual, more playful, or even more sophisticated. Watch for sales, or visit discount stores like Homegoods and TJ Maxx for some great options!
