Craft Room Tour: Photography Studio

As I have moved from home to home, my craft room has morphed and changed over time. My first craft space was a shelving unit from which I could open and take out my craft supplies. From there, I took over one of my kids' bedrooms, and then I moved to a house with a slightly larger extra space. And now I live in a home with an amazing bonus room over the garage. This space is large enough for my crafting space, my daughter's art space, and a photography studio. Because I take photos both for the company I work for, as well as, for my own blog, this has been such a blessing. Here's a little tour of the Photography Studio of my craft room:

I started with some white shelves like these one HERE. Then I began collecting items from second-hand stores, Michael's, JoAnns, and Hobby Lobby. Many of my items are from antique stores or are hand-me-downs from family. To begin with, I stored things kind of willy-nilly as shown here:

It became very clear to me that more often than not, I was shooting items by color. So I rearranged the shelves so that I had items by color. That helped me see where the holes were in my prop collection. And I could fill those spots as I was out and about. Here are a few photos of the newly organized shelves:

Here's a little sneak peek of a magazine shoot that was done recently in my studio. You can see how my desk looks over to my photography studio space. You can also see my studio lights (the white umbrella lights). For more information on my favorite small studio photography equipment, read more HERE.

In the photo below, you can see a few additional items in this space: the magnet chalkboard that I clip or prop backdrops up against, my Ikea desktop on which I place additional backdrops. At the top of the shelves, you can see larger shelving units that I use in my photography. To the right of the shelves, you can see my backdrops. Many are wooden pieces from the clearance section of Ikea. Some are fabric covered foam boards in a variety of colors. My preferred backdrop? A shiny white poster board slightly curved to create an endless white background. I usually get a few from Walmart or the dollar store for super cheap and trade them out when they get bent or look old.

For those of you interested in building up your Photography Props, try using this checklist HERE. Start with a few basic things and only buy what you will truly use. I needed a lot more than is probably typical because I have taken photos for magazines, marketing promos, and more. But hopefully some of my props will inspire you to find your own.

If you'd like a tour of my previous craft room, be sure to visit this blog post HERE. You can also watch the video below, which gives you a good idea of how I enjoy storing my products.
