What Do You Stand For?

Have you ever asked yourself what it is that you stand for? What are your values, your goals? Who are you? This is a question I ask myself almost daily. And while I have some strong, foundational concepts of who I am, there are other things about me that seem to change.

How do you keep yourself on track? Have you chosen "One Little Word" this year for yourself? Maybe something like faith, or enlighten, or even endure? Do you sit down and set goals in your weekly or daily planner? Do you have a mantra you repeat each day?

Many years ago when I was young, my family spent a night which we called Family Home Evening to explore our family's values. As we solidified those ideas, we came up with a Family Crest. I wish I could find that Family Crest. It would be interesting to see how much of those values and goals we stuck to and what things changed (because family dynamics often do).

A couple of years ago, I took some time to create my own personal/family crest and this is what I created:

Some of my values include:
- Family
- Honesty
- Hard Work
- Kindness
- Service
- Faith

Want to create your own family/personal crest? Start with a list of values that you hold dear. Then think of a visual way to represent 4-5 of those main ideas. Create a crest from a die cut shape and then add the visual pieces to parts of the crest. Incorporate text as well to help define the items you've picked. Hang the finished crest where the family can see and remember.

Then from time-to-time review to see if the family is staying on track to your values. It's an interesting exercise in goal-setting and values. I'd love to hear if you've done something similar in your own family in the comments below.
