Tales of a Tract Home: In Search of Craft Room Solutions!

Ok, blog readers and followers. I need your help. As we prepare to close on our home this month, I'm faced with an exciting new challenge: setting up a new craft space. The problem? It's a bonus room space with peaked roofs, and it's totally throwing off my design mojo.

I'd like to hear your suggestions on how to set up a space like this. Have you decorated a bonus room space before? How do you deal with the lower walls? How do you deal with no space to hang things on the wall? Where do you place your desk?

I've started a Pinterest board with scrapbook spaces HERE. But I've only found a few spaces with roof lines like this. That's where you come in. I'd love to hear what has worked for you or what you think will work.

We are most likely changing out the flooring and the paint. I'm thinking laminate for the flooring and a lighter color on the walls. But what would you do?

Leave your suggestions in the comments below, and help a girl out!

  1. I would definitely redo the walls and floor, using lighter paint and laminate floors! My craft/scrapbook room has light walls and a dark laminate floor and I LOVE it. Oh and gotta do a paint scheme that would raise that ceiling height, boy that darker ceiling brings it all way too far down and makes the room look much smaller. As for the desk placement, I'd do right in the middle I couldn't face a low wall like that I would feel way too claustrophobic. If budget allows built in cabinets that frame the window and follow the roof line would be great, put glass in the cabinet doors and keep the lighter airy feeling. There's my two cents for what it is worth :) Good luck with the design, can't wait to see what you do. I am sure it will be great as your sense of design is spot on.

    1. Love the idea of glass doors to keep it "open." Hadn't even thought of that! Thank you.

  3. We got 5 very cheap bookshelves from office max like $10 and lined the up along on of the slanted walls. it ended up looking built in because they fit perfectly. I put my desk in front of the window and used a couch to divide an office from an hang out area.

I've left you two links above...but didn't add my comments, sorry! I collect (hoard) craft room photos :). So I left you links to two bonus rooms with eaves. The first one is Martha Stewarts!, but her roof line may be higher than yours. Good luck on the planning!

  9. My bedroom is exactly like the room you have pictured, and Kristen L is right, there is lots of space behind those low walls. We have converted them into long storage closets which is super helpful!

  10. I know you've received lots of great advice. My only advice would be to paint the walls and ceiling the same color. I learned this trick from a decorator years ago. It helps raise the ceiling and makes the room look larger. Good luck! Can't wait to see the finished product!
