Tuesday Tip: Negative Die Cut Shapes

I have been using die cuts on my layouts for so long it feels like forever. If you've been scrapbooking as long as I have, then you'll remember those big die cut towers at scrapbook stores that sold pre-cut shapes in primary colors. Thankfully we have progressed to more sophisticated machines.

One of my favorite trends right now are the negative die cut shapes I've seen in Project Life pockets, cards and layouts. I wanted to share a tip for creating them today.

Step 1: Open up your digital die cut software and type in the text you'd like to use. (I suggest using a fat font so the machine will cut more smoothly and the background papers you use will show through better.) Arrange and resize it the way you'd like and then cut it out from cardstock.

Step 2: Remove the cardstock from the cutting pad. Rather than using the die cut shape. Use the entire sheet of cardstock to create your project.

Here is a sneek peek of a project I have coming to the 2Peas Garden in which I used this technique. I was completely inspired by the ever fabulous Lisa Truesdell who is a genius at this technique.

I also found some readymade products that you might like to try this technique with. These "Fact Or Fiction" tags are precut for you making this technique quick and easy:

I am astounded at the "coolness" of this digital kit by Erica Hernandez. This "Washi Words" digital kit already does all the work for you. Simply print off the card you like and add journaling as desired. If you like Project Life or journaling cards, this kits for YOU:

As you can see, there are many approaches to this cool tip. Give it a try. It's so much fun. One final tip? Keep those letters that you cut for another project. I love it when you can use leftovers in a whole new way!
