I AM A Child of God

Yesterday I had the sweet priviledge of hosting Relief Society (our church's women's group) for the Retirement Home in town. I arrived about 15 minutes early feeling nervous and anxious about how best to do my duty for these sweet sisters (and one gentleman). Most of the women were driven in on their beds and slept the entire time. Many seemed incoherent but anxious to be a part of whatever was going on in the rec room. One sister asked me over and over again if we were going to "sing songs" to which I replied that we were "in just a minute."

While I sat there waiting I thought about how thin the veil can be (the curtain that divides our memories between the life before and the life now) as our children come into the world. The day my children were born it seemed as if heaven was quite near. It is much the same as we draw near to the close of our life. That same curtain seems to thin, and we start to glimpse that the Lord is patiently waiting for his sweet older children to return to him again.

As I sat there thinking about how soon these sweet women (and men) would be returning to those they loved and home to heaven, music from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was softly playing in the background. As one familiar children's song came on, a sister on the back row began to sign along . . .

"I am a child of God and He has sent me here.
Has given me an earthly home with parents kind and dear.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside.
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do to live with Him some day."

With sweet confidence from her fog of forgetfulness, she sang out loud and clear.

My heart soared as I realized that she STILL recognizes who she is. That she is one of God's choice daughters, that she recognizes he knows her and loves her.

Although I was concerned about how I would bring the Spirit to these women, I was instead rewarded with a reminder that we are ALL His children and that He loves us.

On this day of Thanksgiving, I am grateful for the reminder that I too am a Child of God and that He loves me!

May the peace and love of this holiday surround you today!

  2. Thanks for sharing this sweet story. Sometimes we need to focus on the important thing - like who we are and how important we are :-)
